What's up with the Panthers

With the Pitt Panthers coming out of a 10 and 3 season with a bowl victory over North Carolina and a miscue on a penalty vs. Cincinnati which may have cost the Panthers a BCS bid, the recruiting is starting to shape itself out in the middle of May. Some 1A schools have upwards of 10+ commitments as of May 20, 2010 of the Rising Seniors(present Juniors) for the Class of 2011. As of May 20, the Pitt Panthers have 3 commitments of which I can comment on 2 of them. One of the commitments comes from heralded DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Md coached by the fabled Bill McGregor who is originally from the Dormont section of Pittsburgh and played at the Catholic School Powerhouse South Hills Catholic(now Seton LaSalle). He is TE Sam Collura, a strapping 6'3 1/2"/245 Tight End who reminds me of recent Pitt TE Nate Byham who was recently drafted in the 6th round by the 49ers last April. Collura has good in-line blocking skills, plus can release into space and be a sound pass receiver. His powerful and rugged blocking game makes him a valuable recruit if you are a running team like the Panthers. The other commitment is OL Artie Rowell from Harrisburg, PA Central Dauphin. Coached by high level technician Glen McNamee, Rowell is a workhorse interior lineman. Just about 6'2 1/2"/280 he has a nice surge off the line and is athletic enough to get ot the second level and block inside linebackers. He has similarities to former OG John Malecki who has a solid career as a starting OG for Pitt. This is the time of the year when the Juniors(next season Seniors)are deciding on their collegiate choices. I will keep everyone updated.
